Guest hugh Posted February 22, 2004 Report Posted February 22, 2004 Firstly very brief thanks, once again, for the pollen filter pictures. I changed the filter last weekend, I think it's location and fitting method must be one of the worst bits of automotive design ever. Yesterday when doing an oil change I had the sump guard off and was horrified to see the bracket which the power steering pump is attached to had fractured at one corner. The pump is flapping around and the plate by the crankshaft pulley (with the belt adjustment slot) has bent as a result. I'm pretty sure the breakage has occured because at some point in the cars life one of the pivot bolts (allowing the pump to swing in and out from the engine for belt adjustment) has not been re-fitted so the pump has been slightly loose and over stressing the bracket. I hate to think what could have happened had the bracket sheared fully allowing the pump to detach itself possibly when travelling at speed. Has any one else had this problem? Best Wishes Hugh  Quote
seatkid Posted February 22, 2004 Report Posted February 22, 2004 Couldn't be a dealer that did that surely?? [sarcastic remark] Reminds me of when a Ford dealer left out top 4 bolts on bell housing on my mums Sierra after a clutch change because they were difficult to reach... BTW Hugh, I see you must have the (very) limited edition 1.8Tdi ! :o Quote
Guest hugh Posted February 22, 2004 Report Posted February 22, 2004 Yup you guessed I'm sure it wasa dealer that left the bolt out and no, I'm the limited edition not the car. It's a bog standard 1.9 TDI ! Hugh Quote
seatkid Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 Tell the dealer and if he's not prepared to do anything report them to Ford. Report them to Fords anyway for gross negligence. Quote
Guest hugh Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 Dear group, I thought readers might be interested to hear the outcome of the fractured bracket: I took the car in to our local Ford Dealer who found the offending bolt had sheared; they drilled and "easy outed" the bit that was left in the block. I asked if this was a problem they'd come accross before and they were a bit cagey but suggested that as the Plymouth main dealer had the bracket in stock it was not an unknown occurance. I have to say I'm somewhat doubtful, I've never known an alternator bolt that was tightened up proprly to shear, so why should a similar bolt on the power steering pump ? Once again I'd like to hear other views on this and, yes, I shall be contacting FMC. Could anyone suggest the best person, 'phone number, e-mail or address to try ? Best Wishes Hugh Quote
